SiCKO - Full Documentary

(81 votes - 53 comments - 3665 views)
Sicko is not a movie about the 50 million Americans walking around without health insurance. Sicko is a movie about the other 250 million of us who have insurance, but are just as well and truly screwed. It’s also about freedom, real freedom, not the empty kind that gets thrown around as a buzzword; the freedom to live your life with the certainty that forces beyond your control won’t take away everything you have and everything you are. We don’t have that kind of freedom here in America, and Moore’s film makes that point by simply talking to real people. They’re your neighbors, your friends, your parents, some of them are even 9/11 heroes. Moore uses his camera to let them tell their stories of insurance company mistreatment and in the process paints a complete picture of a corrupt and fatally flawed system which isn’t just killing people but taking away their dignity and their liberty.

At first, he isn’t telling us anything we don’t already know. Anyone who’s spent any time dealing with insurance companies knows what a mess it is. You pay your premiums and then when you actually need them they go out of their way not to help you. They’re in the business of finding reasons not to spend money, and everyone knows it. What you may not know is just how far they’ll go. Having insurance doesn’t mean you’re protected, and the film covers both ends of the spectrum from people left to die because insurance companies refuse treatment, to people dropped from policies for bogus reasons, to an elderly couple driven to bankruptcy and made homeless by high deductibles. The film leaves no room for anyone to think it won’t happen to them. It will. It happens to everyone, just in varying degrees. When you walk out of Sicko, you’ll do it with the absolute certainty that if you ever encounter serious health trouble, you’re screwed.
Fox News Special Report - "Hacker Gangs"

(65 votes - 39 comments - 3091 views)
4CHAN PARTY VAN STRIKES AGAIN! I NEED /B/LACKUP!
This is Serious Business! Some true lulz to be sure, Fox News does a piece on, get this... 4chan. I've been a /b/tard for years and this has got to be the most delicious cake you must eat ever, ~desu.

Do a barrel roll.

For anyone that doesn't know, 4chan is the epicenter of internet culture. It is where every meme you've ever encountered comes from. Those captioned cat pictures your mom found out about last month and forwarded you in an email? 4chan. Parody motivational posters? 4chan. And really, that's just our table scraps.

4chan is an image board started by former Something Awful forum goon by the name of m00t. An "Image Board" is kind of like a traditional web forum, except the purpose is just to share pictures about any given genre. It differs in functionality from a forum in that you are required to post a picture in order to start a thread. 4chan's /b/ section which is titled "random" has forced anonymity, and there are almost literally no rules -- it is completely unmoderated. This has contributed to exponential growth, which has in turn encouraged a paradigm of user created content that is truly unique on the internet, and from a point of view of "digital anthropology", quite beautiful, despite the content.

These "raids" the news piece speaks of really are just done for laughs -- there's nothing personal about it. Many a /b/tard (the self adopted name of participants) have even fallen prey to it themselves. The point is, as the piece said, to invoke lulz, but also drama. "The Internet is Serious Business" for example, is a common meme. The meme pokes fun at those who take things that happen on the internet way too seriously, and really are ultimately the ones to initiate the drama. A 4chan raid is really meant to be a bit of performance art in which the target is an unknowing writer, director, and lead actor in their own play about internet drama, which in actuality it is their own actions that are exacerbating more drama. The irony is delicious to true /b/tards.

tl;dr version:

Don't take things too seriously and things won't take you too seriously..

(17 votes - 0 comments - 559 views)
Every day technologies are being used to monitor Americans with unprecedented scrutiny -- from driving habits to workplace surveillance. Shoppers and diners are observed and analyzed; Internet searches are monitored and used as evidence in court.

It is big business that collects most of the data about us. But increasingly, it's the government that's using it.

In a Special Report airing Thursday at 9pm and midnight ET, "Big Brother Big Business," CNBC takes a look at the companies behind the powerful business of personal information and the people whose lives are affected by it, including: a woman who lost her job due to mistaken identity; a man whose cell phone records were stolen by his former employer; a woman whose personal information was stolen from a company she had never heard of; a man who discovered his rental car company was tracking his every move.

The documentary also looks at how the FBI, the Border Patrol, police departments and schools are using biometric technologies to establish identity as well as an inside peek at an AOL division that works solely to satisfy the requests of law enforcement for information about AOL's members.
