Nineteen hours ago, crowned member IssyKitty instabanned probationary member BobKnight for reasons that are unclear. Considering his comment history, many may not feel that it is a great loss to The Sift, and I to a small degree agree. What troubles me is that there has been a trend towards purging The Sift of anyone who is not overtly liberally or politically oriented to the Left. We rally against them en masse, and any dissenting political view is summarily quashed. In my opinion this has adversely affected the fabric of the site and is threatening to homogenize the political views and content on this site to the point that it is starting to resemble a bizarro Free Republic.

My personal feelings aside, the question that remains is the culpability of Member Issykitty on the charge of Abuse of Power. I don't think I see anything in the banned member's comment history that justifies her use of the power she was entrusted with.

Below is the straw that I think broke the kitty's back...

a) Nobody should be banned for expressing happiness for anyone's death. They're dead, it's not hurting them one bit. I sincerely hope I'm not the only one with this opinion.

b) I'm sorry schmawy, but the status quo is that we don't hold Siftquisitions - ultimately whatever punishment will be dealt to our monarch is all up to dag. I don't like it and I've voiced my disagreement with this 'community decision' vehemently, but those are the current rules. So while it's for the best for this discussion to be taken to Sift Talk instead of comments for the video, the results of this poll are more or less irrelevant.

c) (edit) the account appears to be unbanned as of couple minutes ago.

schmawy says...

You didn't like it, I didn't like it, and Dag didn't like it when we dropped the SQ. If you looked back at those threads you'll see that I felt that the system, although democratic, lacked nuance in sentencing.

Dag said that he would try to abide by the outcome of polls.

So I'm taking advantage of loopholes, and gaming the System. I learned this from choggie, and even though some people disliked or even hated him, he ultimately made the sift stronger.

So go ahead and vote EDD. Remedy our "extremely stupid decision". You have the power.

Whom has the Sift "purged" for not being a lefty/liberal?

- CaptainPlanet420? - No, he was banned for deliberately and repeatedly using the wrong channel assignments, just to stir up some shit. He had already been banned for 2 weeks for the same offense prior to his permanent ban for repeat offending.

- BillOreilly? - No, he flamed out by going on a downvote spree, discarding a valid Sift Talk post, and declaring a good video dead. It was vandalism, plain and simple.

- choggie? - No, he flamed out by writing an ad hom Sift Talk post because the admins wouldn't give him another channel, then going on a downvote spree, and then discarding a video for no good reason. This was after he had already been banned for two weeks for wrongfully discarding a video, and prior to that he wrongfully discarded a video too, and he was warned to never do it again. So choggie's exile had nothing to do with his political views, and everything to do with his antisocial behavior.

- MINK? - MINK was never banned. He imposed his own exile. And people generally didn't like his comments NOT because they went against the prevailing sentiments, but because he generally labeled everything and everyone as "retarded." When you do something like that over and over, it's considered in most quarters to be "flaming."

- quantumushroom? - QM was temporarily banned for a downvote spree, not for his dissenting point of view. He's still here, BTW

If it were true that all members whose political points of view were not lefty/liberal have been systematically run off, then we wouldn't have blankfist, MarineGunrock, Doc_M, quantumushroom, Winstonfield_Pennypacker, and imstellar28 here, among others.

I won't debate you that this site is largely liberal, because it just is. However I remember when Ron Paul was the bees knees here, and he ain't exactly a darling of the left.

Basically I'm saying that it's unfair to accuse us of "purging" political dissenters, because it just ain't true.

schmawy says...

Okay, KP. You're right. I was being samefully dramatic when I said "purged". I retract and apologize. The sift has always been fair to a fault, and I have suffered heartache from supporting the unpopular, as I do know. And watch, BobKnight will end up being a huge pain in the ass, probably, but I'd rather we let guilty people free than jail the innocent.

As far the Queen Issy's fate, well I wouldn't have done what she did, but I'm not going to vote in this poll at all because we eliminated SiftQuisitions.

And as long as we're discussing SiftQuisitions, I was against them because without any rules or even someone to guide the proceedings (like a judge), they are in essence mob justice. I'm all for revisiting the SiftQuisition feature. I'd like to see some type of formal justice around here that doesn't involve just one person. But the SiftQuisition feature as it stood generally sucked.

So, should I discard this poll then?

^I say don't, since we do need a place to discuss this. At the very least don't do so until the admin who unbanned the account has chirped in.

schmawy says...

Well how does this look to you? As you can see, there is no option to permanently ban Issykitty, because noone wants that.

I've reviewed the comments, and though he does appear to be half troll on his mother's side, it doesn't quite rise to anything bannable. I'm going to reverse the ban and unhobble you.
In reply to this comment by Issykitty:
Hey dag,
It looks like started up some controversy today. I instabanned a trollish probie that caught my attention in one of the recently sifted vids which led to schmawy's shackling of me. Here is the guy's profile: http://www.videosift.com/member/bobknight33
I just wanted to get your take on this before this continues. Thanks.

I could see the reason in his ban, not for the joy of ted kennedy's death - I don't really give a shit about that - but because of his comment history. We'll see.

gwiz665 says...

And like kp said, it's not that we ban people we disagree with, the people we ban are abusers of power, who should be banned in any case - they just happen to be conservative, or whatever the hell they are.

Correlation does not mean causation, but there is an interesting trend.

I think that more often than not, our friend Schmawy is the reasonable sweet uncle for the sift. He takes you to the park and buys you ice cream, but you won't get to tear his shit up.
I see where he is coming from.
It's all about protecting what the sift is about and keeping it real.

I'm totally not siding, but I see his side as well as Issy's.

I like a pot stirrer now and then, and when someone has passed emotions are high.
