As you may know, I've been engaged in a dialog on Facebook with Russ, a young earth creationist minister. I really have to hand it to Facebook- it's exposed me to people that I would not normally get into a conversation with. I hate to say it, but our site can be a bit of an echo chamber at times - and I value to the opportunity to talk to people who are so far out from the majority philosophy here. Read on for the fun conversation:

I just updated my YouSift script. A couple of video hosts have changed their layout since my last update, so the script stopped working for them. It's now fully functional again and I also included support for FunnyOrDie.com.

You can download the script here.

YouSift is a little script I made for the FireFox addon Greasemonkey, which makes it easier for you to sift videos. It inserts a sharing button for VideoSift on a couple of popular video hosts. When clicked, it redirects you to the VideoSift submission page and automatically fills in all the info it can find (embed code, title, tags, description).

Currently supported are: YouTube, Break.com, Dailymotion, CollegeHumor and FunnyOrDie.com

It's really irritating that 99.9% of men's underwear has insufficient specificity in sizing. Seriously, only 5 sizes for everybody? What the heck are they thinking? With how many millions of pairs are sold every month, you'd think they could have more, like 15 or 20 sizes.

Also, I hate the elastic waistbands that are used as a crutch for wildly inaccurate sizing. On every pair of underwear I have, either the waistband is too tight or the rest of it is too baggy. And i'm not fat at all. My body mass index is completely average (Rather below average, considering I live in the USA).

If it's sized properly it should apply no more pressure than the minimum that is necessary to prevent it from falling off. Every underwear I've tried applies several orders of magnitude more than that, or else falls off. I've tried taking underwear that fits perfectly, except for the elastic waistband that applies too much pressure, and stretched it out as much as possible in order to weaken the elastic. That helps a little bit.

I have some Tshirt ideas. But I seem to be completely ungifted in any sort of digital medium.

So I'm going to blog my ideas as they come to me and hope someone will make me snazzy tshirts.

1. *femme (in pretty pink cursive letters) / *geek (in green DOS type font)  id like this on a girly fitting black tshirt

 2.   Fashion is an ugliness so intolerable it must be altered every six months - oscar wilde

id like this dull white typeset font on a dingy black asymetrical obnoxious hipster style tee, maybe something with a torn looking vneck

more later, i have stop the girl from breaking the game system.

all of the digitally challenged are invited to leave their tshirt ideas here!

Hey friends,

I just wanted to post another blog entry before my charter membership ends. Had to cancel it for the time being since I just haven't been a very active member for the last 4 months or so. ;(

In any case, shits been crazy. Been trying to get by in my first semester as a phd queef. Life has been pretty good. Miss hanging out on the sift a lot. Rochester is cold and dark... gotta keep myself from going nuts.

I have two seminar papers due in the next couple of weeks. rrrrrgh... working on this artist Luc Delahaye right now. Here is a link to an article and some examples of his work. http://www.artnet.com/magazine/features/sullivan/sullivan4-10-03.asp#6

So, be well, all. Seems like there's a lot of shit thats gone down in the last while. Wow... sift is always changing. I love it.

Be well...

I don't see all the excitement that the tv people are describing, but I guess it's a big moment for Africa.

Here's to hoping we won't end up in the "group of death" again

Edit: Here's the plan (thx eric3579 for the link)

This post has made me think about religion and Atheism.

I'm afraid I come across as an Atheist evangelist. I don't really want to convert religious people to Atheism - (I'd rather convert a PC user to a Mac). I do wish that religion was an order of magnitude less important in people's life - say maybe on a level with astrology.

I do think that atheism is becoming more mainstream, accepted - and a "movement" centered around leaders like Dawkins and Hitchens. I wonder what the world would be like if say 85% of the world professed atheism?

It's possible that things would be much, much worse. It could be akin to taking people of their anti-depressants. Maybe we don't want to have the majority of people facing the fact of their own mortality.

I saw Ricky's new movie The Invention of Lying the other day- it was a subtle appeal for atheism that portrayed a completely rational, truthful world where everyone knew they were going to be eaten by worms when they died. But I wonder if the meaning of the movie kind of back-fired. The people in the rational world were completely miserable with the truth. (Kind of a shit movie by the way - not Ricky Gervais' finest work)

I saw something on 60 Minutes a few years ago on a study that was looking at what common characteristics centenarians shared. The single most prevalent trait was a deep, deep faith. All of them went to church on a weekly basis. And this is silly to confess, and completely irrational but I sometimes think about Carl Sagan's relatively young death from Myelodysplastic syndrome and wonder what his health would have been like if he was a church deacon.

Here's an idea. Maybe faith has been selected for by evolution. People who "let go and let God" are more likely to live a long, healthy life and procreate - and so religion has been baked into our genetic code.

Scary thought.

The lyrics of the song in its opening credits made secular humanists (who are the majority of the trek fan base) cringe.   The theme alone was an affront to one of Gene Roddenberry's core principles about star trek.

Instead of orchestral themes, it had this cheap wannabe pop song.

Instead of moral dilemmas, it had tits.

Instead of shakespearean stage actors and drama professors playing well-balanced and noble characters, it had typical TV actors playing trigger-happy rednecks.

...will be away from the Sift for a while. May check in periodically as time permits. Currently I'm in a seedy motel in Seligman, Arizona. Hitting the road again tomorrow and hope to be in Santa Fe by afternoon.

Our film is world premiering in the Santa Fe Film Festival. Send head cheese and waffles. If you're in the area, be sure to stop by on December 3rd. http://santafe.bside.com/2009/films/yeardley_santafe2009

I mentioned the tiltshift app before in my blog, they have an online version, an AIR application version and a iPhone version... here is some recent use.

I took my son in for a bi monthly hair cut at the awesome old school shop "Sweeny Todd's Barbershop" and had my camera at my side, it was about 4PM and the light was perfectly falling into the shop, so I asked Todd (the owner) if I could take some pics. Here is some of what I got...(there are more photos after the break)

Edit: Lucky was kind enough to work a conversion into the embed validation, so you can just use the embed MSNBC provides and it'll work fine .

Ok I posted a while ago how to retrieve the actual embeds of msnbc videos from the iframe code they supply (which videosift doesn't accept). Here's an even simpler method:

Get the embed code from the MSNBC player. It'll look something like this:

<div><iframe height="339" width="425" src="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22425001/vp/34048208#34048208" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"></iframe><p style="font-size:11px; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #999; margin-top: 5px; background: transparent; text-align: center; width: 425px;">Visit msnbc.com for ... [then some additional links and stuff]...

Notice the bold red number. This is the only thing you need from the embed. Take the number and insert it into this embed code:

<embed width="425" height="339" align="top" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" seamlesstabbing="true" allowfullscreen="true" wmode="window" devicefont="false" menu="false" id="fl20172813" name="fl20172813" mayscript="" salign="tl" scale="noborder" quality="Best" bgcolor="#000000" loop="true" play="true" swliveconnect="TRUE" src="http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/i/MSNBC/Components/Video/_Player/swfs/embedPlayer/ey09302009h.swf?domain=www.msnbc.msn.com&amp;settings=22425448&amp;useProxy=true&amp;wbDomain=www.msnbc.msn.com&amp;launch=34048208&amp;sw=1680&amp;sh=1050&amp;EID=oVPEFC&amp;playerid=22425001"/>

And that's it. I'm sure this conversion will eventually make it into the embed validation and it'll be done for you. Until then, this should be the easiest way of sifting MSNBC videos.

Seriously.  I wasn't particularly sold on it from the trailer, but the movie is really, really good.  It's definitely right up there with Anderson's live action stuff.  If you're a fan of his at all, you really do owe it to yourself to see it on the big screen.  Even if you're not, go see it anyway -- it's a really fun movie, with such charming, beautifully shot animation; I really don't see how anyone could not like it.

Shooting between takes, the model was getting into position during a rope bondage shoot . I'm starting to get the feel for the 7D. I've started diving into the use of color profiles. This is also my first time using color grading in my video. All shot hand held, slow motion was shot at 720p60 and conformed down to 24 in Cinema Tools, the rest was shot 1080p24 and 1080p30.

The music is Night People - Gently Johnny (edited)

Camera: Canon EOS 7D w/ super flat color profile
Lens: Canon 50mm f/1.8
Editing: Final Cut Pro
Color Grading: Apple Color

I've been drinking vodka based drinks since I was 13. Never really took to beer, not until I went to the USA at 17, oddly enough. And even then only because it was often between beer and staying sober. Beggars can't be choosers I guess. Believe it or not, I have fond memories of Miller beer

How long before we join hands across the world and decide on a date format.  Many use mm/dd/yy but OTHERS uses dd/mm/yy.  Now, sometimes you can determine which one the other of the date is using because the "dd" section goes higher than "12".  Since we know there's no more than 12 months in a year, we can safely assume that the higher number is the "days" part of the date.  But let's say we have the date 10/08/09...is that August 10th or is that October 8th?  Or do I just have to research the author's culture to determine which one it is.

Come on it's 2009, going on 2010 and we haven't come to an agreement yet?  I'm willing to change the way I do it, if the whole world comes to a standard agreement.  I'm not picky, I just like standardizing.

oh and why we're on standard labeling conventions, it's "artist - song title" not the other way around!!!
